Scorpions

, Comments Off on Scorpions , in Bugs

Scorpions are easily identified by their characteristic shape. They prefer dry land, but you could find them anywhere in Texas. Scorpions have long slender bodies with a five segment tail with a stinger at the tip. They also come equipped with pincers. This is how they defend themselves. Scorpions hide during the day and are active at night. Some species of scorpions dig burrows in the soil. Their bodies are flat, which allows them hide and pray through small cracks. They feed on small insects, spiders, centipedes, earthworms and other scorpions. Once they catch their prey, they use the pincers to crush prey and feed themselves. Scorpions can inflict a painful sting using the poison gland at the end of the tail. Most stings produce a moderate reaction for most people. However, a person who is stung should watch for adverse reactions. An ice pack applied to the affected area will relieve some pain. If swelling, pain, and sometimes breathing difficulties occur, then seek medical attention.
